How to Wire a Switch to Lock Up the Torque Converter on a R Transmission
Von Rigg Fink, you're right, its not that hard. Install the new filter into the transmission by gently pushing up on it. Watch how this happens in the following pictures. When you install the switch, be careful to not over-tighten it. This red wire will also require a female spade connector.
The only other modification that I had to do is to cut off a section of the case to clear my headers. No first hand experience mind you, but it does kinda make sense. Some s other than the Corvette, Firebird, or Camaro units use a fourth gear switch or a third gear switch which is normally open and can be used as is. The transmission has the following dimensions and gear ratios Case to ext Housing.
It Still Runs
After this picture I show you examples of how I modified the bell crank to get these angles and distances. For lack of anything better to do I decided to do nothing, yet anyway. You don't really have to use the delay valve, sample good profile online but I already had it so why not? The factory installed a couple of different types of pressure switches depending on the application.
The following is an overview of this system as we understand it. Tighten screws, then recheck reading to insure adjustment has not changed. Consult your speedometer manufacturer for its recommended solution. Never attempt to drive a vehicle with low transmission fluid.

This time, I will use an electronic speedo. These adjustments should be made in the exact sequence detailed below, with the engine warmed to normal operating temperature. As you can see from the pictures all the splines on the drum are sheared off and this piece just shattered.
Re 700r4 TCC/lockup wiring
When this happens it takes a lot more rpms to make the transmission shift. Locate a body ground under the vehicle and attach one end of the gauge wire to the body ground. Now again, with so many different variations of these things, you may also have a single wire solenoid. The photos in the article are of a R tranny. The tranny let go when I was accelerating up to highway speed from the on ramp.
There is no difference in the way it locks. If the transmission does need to be replaced I highly recommend replacing it with a re-manufactured unit. Will the tranny will fit in the car?

Needless to say I didn't see anything that would lead me to believe anything was going to let go. So what happens is, it locks and unlocks, over and over again. Always leave enough extra length when cutting wire, so it can be secured later.
Either way works the same. These are the critical distances and angles you need to get right so that your transmission will shift properly and won't be damaged in short order. He works on these transmissions all the time and you can trust his answers. On another Q-Jet I cut the bell crank on the throttle shaft above an existing mounting hole and below the center line of the shaft. Who knows what's in the converter.
This is potentially a very dangerous condition that can lead to rapid clutch failure. The wiring diagram shown is how I wired my car. They are to the best of my knowledge.

They'll work for any carb, best hookup website or series of carbs. The front seal is a whole different story. Determining whether this is correct can only be done by the installer!
The blue, or in some applications dark green, wire terminal B is connected to the fourth gear overdrive switch in the valve body. Peek under a hot rod today and it's not uncommon to find an automatic overdrive resting between the frame rails. With out the proper turning radius at this hook-up point, the transmision will never operate properly. Now hook the cable back up, with the adjuster out towards the carb. You see the two terminals that you need to hook to.
- Then connect to the new single-pin connector at the transmission arrow, photo C.
- On one of the Q-jets I used there was a mounting hole at the right radius from the throttle shaft center line, but not at the right angle.
- Drive the vehicle onto car ramps, put it in park, and set the emergency brake.
- For mine I have to pull the tranny out to get at the governor, Oh well.
To help you understand this system we will first demonstrate how this system operates in a typical stock factory application. The ground side of the circuit is provided by the method described below. Common failure points on the governor are the gears, the springs coming loose or debris preventing the valve that the governor is connected to from moving. My motor turns on at rpm and I like to shift at rpm for first to second and rpm for second to third.
The cancel switch is mounted on a bracket under the dash. Torque the transmission bolts to the manufacturer's recommended torque with a small torque wrench. Sometimes a low price will justify the cost of replacing the transmission. That site's been referred to twice in this thread already!

These are slim so this is the reason I recommend to use a junkyard donor for the plug black arrow, photo D. Before you change any wiring, find the solenoid arrow, photo A and the two wires connected to it. This condition is normally safe to drive but the transmission may perform unsatisfactorily. The trans is new enough that it has a lot of wires going to it. Externally, all it needs is a volt source and an engine-vacuum reference.
The is the piece is part of the piston assembly that goes inside the above drum. If they aren't right it is going to be hard to get the transmission to shift right under all load combinations and you sooner or later you will be fixing the transmission. Some mounting tabs from different sources are now available for different carbs if you don't feel like doing this yourself.
- So, in my mind, they are still locking and unlocking.
- Transmission oil is usually red or green while engine oil is a golden color.
- Since writing this article, I've had a lot of inquiries about it.
This Part One will explain this in specific detail. The brake pedal arm makes contact with the switch when it is all the way out. Return to Sumner's Home Page. Before checking minimum idle speed be sure the ignition timing is correct and, be sure the throttle body is clean around the throttle plates.
Warnings Never turn on the torque converter lock-up at slow speeds, as this may damage your vehicle. Before we do so, one extremely important point needs to be made. We do this so our customers can feel very comfortable with getting this transmissions installed correctly.
You can go a click or two on the adjuster either way from here, but no more. You need to make sure that when the brake pedal is all the way out there is power going through, press the pedal and the power is interrupted. If the pressure drops, if is normally safe to drive the vehicle.
Tips The toggle switch can be installed in any location inside the vehicle. If however you know how to build it to handle the power please let me know. This shows the sheared off splines.
